WWE has issued a statement in response to assertions made by recently released star Keith Lee that he covered his own medical expenses amid his recent health problems.
Keith Lee was released by WWE on November 4th, along with 17 other main roster and NXT Superstars. Keith Lee had just undergone a transformation, which included a new nickname, “Bearcat”, and new wrestling attire at the time of his release.
Lee appeared prominently after being called up to the main roster in the summer of 2020, before disappearing from television in early 2021. After being diagnosed with COVID-19, Keith Lee revealed that the virus had led to inflammation of the heart.
Lee issued a lengthy statement on social media following his release, thanking fans for their support, but that wasn’t all. Keith Lee added in the same statement that he had paid his medical bills and found suggestions “amusing” that anyone else had done so.
In response to Lee’s claims, WWE has released a statement of their own. Lee’s views were later labelled “erroneous” by the company:
“Keith Lee’s recent comments implying WWE failed to pay his medical bills are erroneous.
WWE has an extensive healthcare program for the medical care of its in-ring performers and Mr. Lee was part of this program while with the company.
Should Mr. Lee have any concerns over the payment of medical bills, he is welcome to address them with WWE.”
Following runs with Ring of Honor, Evolve, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Lee signed with WWE in 2018. Lee debuted on NXT, where he became the first star to hold both the North American Championship and the NXT Title at the same time.
