This week’s episode of Smackdown saw the finals of the WWE Intercontinental Championship Tournament confirmed. But not in the way that most would have expected.

We were due to see two semi-finals last night with Daniel Bryan set to meet Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles set to face Elias.

The show began with Elias being taken to hospital with ‘non-life threatening injuries’ as a result of being knocked down, supposedly, by Jeff Hardy driving under the influence.

As a result, both Styles and Bryan were offered byes to the final of the tournament. Of course, being a sneaky heel, Styles took up the offer with glee. Bryan on the other hand insisted on earning his spot.

As a result, a 10-man battle royal was arranged with the winner facing Bryan in the main event. That match was won by Sheamus after eliminating Jey Uso.

Bryan vs. Sheamus ended when Jeff Hardy returned to the Performance Center (Apparently cleared of his drink driving allegations) and distracted Sheamus to allow Bryan to get the win.

Nobody can say it wasn’t convoluted but as of now Daniel Bryan vs. AJ Styles is the final set for next week’s Smackdown with the winner being crowned the winner of the tournament and the new Intercontinental Champion.

The tournament itself was booked to crown a new champion after the reigning titleholder, Sami Zayn, was stripped of the championship due to him exercising his right to not travel amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

With a history as the ‘worker’s belt’, a Styles/Bryan final feels very, very fitting, doesn’t it?
