There is a report circulating that WWE is open to a surprising appearance in this year’s Royal Rumble, in another case of opening ‘the forbidden door’.

Whilst there have been plenty of examples, in particular over the last 12 months, of wrestlers kicking the so-called forbidden door in and appearing for other organisations, it was something which WWE seemed less involved in.

However, plenty of people were shocked when Mickie James, having been released by WWE in 2021, was announced to be a contestant in this year’s Royal Rumble whilst also holding the IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Championship.

When Mickie James was released, there was plenty of controversy as she was seemingly delivered her stored belongings in a trash bag with her name on. Also surprising is that WWE didn’t just name the former Women’s Champion, but acknowledged her current title belt.

After the furore of that announcement cooled down, WrestleVotes reported that there is talk of a similar “unexpected” surprise for the Men’s Royal Rumble match.

Had more than 1 source this weekend, w/o me directly asking, state they believe WWE will try for an “unexpected” forbidden door entrant for the Men’s Royal Rumble. Personally I’m skeptical it happens, but I can confirm WWE is at least open to the idea. Which is exciting enough.

The card for this year’s Royal Rumble is starting to shape up nicely. Outside of the two Rumble contests themselves, we now know that Doudrop will face Becky Lynch for the Raw Women’s Championship after she won a triple-threat match on the 10th January edition of Monday Night Raw. We also know that Brock Lesnar will defend the WWE Championship against Bobby Lashley in a first-time-ever contest, as well as Roman Reigns putting the Universal Championship on the line against Seth Rollins.
