“God is Dead...Who is laughing now?!”

Will Ospreay has defeated Kota Ibushi to become the first ever British born IWGP World Heavyweight Champion at NJPW Sakura Genesis.

Ibushi, who was the first IWGP World Heavyweight Champion after the Intercontinental and Heavyweight Titles were unified on March 4th 2021, held the title for 31 days. Ospreay obtained his opportunity by winning this year’s New Japan Cup, defeating Shingo Takagi in the final.

Ospreay finished off Ibushi with Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker for the pinfall victory. After the match the new champion called out Okada to avenge his loss at Wrestle Kingdom 15 Okada came to the ring, however so did Shingo Takagi.

Takagi claimed that, having defeated Okada in the first round of the New Japan Cup, he is more worthy of a shot at Ospreay’s belt.

Ospreay’s reaction was to tell Okada “first Shingo, then I’m coming for you”.
