A new report has claimed that a former Tag Team Champion was originally scheduled to win the men’s Royal Rumble Match.

While the men’s Royal Rumble match served up one surprise winner, a new report has suggested that it almost threw up an even more shocking winner.

After losing the WWE Championship earlier in the night, Brock Lesnar earned a measure of recompense as he entered and then won the Royal Rumble match. In the process he guaranteed himself a World Title opportunity at WrestleMania 38, and potentially the perfect opportunity to get back at the men who cost him the WWE Championship, Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman.

However, a new report has suggested that things were almost very different. The report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider, has claimed that former Raw Tag Team Champion Riddle was originally scheduled to win the match.

Johnson states that plans were changed a “ton of times” over the course of the week leading up to the show, before the decision was made for Lesnar to be the surprise winner. Although Riddle was the frontrunner until the switch to Lesnar was made.

Furthermore, at one stage a pitch was made which would have seen Riddle’s partner Randy Orton win the match for a third time.

Elsewhere on the show, Roman Reigns retained his Universal Championship against Seth Rollins, via disqualification after refusing to let go of a guillotine chokehold. After the bout, Reigns laid waste to his former Shield brother with a chair.

Meanwhile, the women’s Royal Rumble match saw the long-rumoured return of former Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. Entering at number 28, after a little under three years away, Rousey last eliminated Charlotte Flair to claim a memorable win.
