We’ve all seen it coming for weeks and now it’s official. Cesaro will challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania Backlash on Sunday 17th May.

Cesaro has been on course for the match since his win at WrestleMania 37 against Seth Rollins in April and after another victory over Rollins on this week’s ‘Throwback’ SmackDown, he will now go on to have his first one on one PPV world title match since joining WWE in 2011.

The win over Rollins came about after former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long made a cameo on the retro edition of SmackDown to announce that Cesaro would be granted the match if he could win the already announced match. The bout subsequently took place as the night’s first match and Cesaro claimed victory after interference from both Jimmy and Jey Uso led to Rollins being distracted and fell victim to the Neuralizer.

As an aside, this development between Rollins and The Usos looks like the first stage in a face turn for The Messiah and probable positioning as the next challenger to Reigns.
