The 34th annual Survivor Series PPV takes place on Sunday November 22nd and WWE have wasted no time in laying out the card for the event with six matches already tentatively announced last night on Raw.
Since the brand split in 2016, Survivor Series has taken on the unofficial mantle as the brand vs. brand PPV, featuring a card full of inter-promotional matches. This year is no exception.
The first thing to note is that unlike last year, there is no NXT involvement planned for the event. Last year, the yellow brand took part in all the matches at the event, primarily as a promotional tactic to drive awareness to their then recent launch on USA Network.
The headline bout will pit the WWE Champion Randy Orton from Raw against Smackdown’s Universal Champion Roman Reigns. It is worth mentioning that the last two years, this match has been changed after being announced. In 2018, the match was due to be Jinder Mahal vs. Brock Lesnar until AJ Styles defeated Mahal for the WWE Championship and replaced him in the match. Last year, Styles himself was replaced by Daniel Bryan after the same title changed hands, resulting in a match against Lesnar again.
The newly crowned SmackDown Women’s champion, Sasha Banks will face her Raw equivalent Asuka and the tag team champions of each brand will face off when The New Day meet The Street Profits.
Rounding out the champion vs. champion element of the card, the Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn is currently slated to face the United States champ, Bobby Lashley.
None of those matches fit the traditional face vs. heel mould with two seeing heels face off with each other and two seeing all-babyface confrontations. With almost four weeks to go until the event, it is almost a lock that at least one of these matches will change.
The elimination matches on the show are also starting to take place with Raw naming its entire women’s team and 60% of its mens team. In the women’s elimination match, Nia Jax, Shayna Baszler, Mandy Rose, Dana Brooke and Lana will face an as yet undetermined team from SmackDown.
On the male side, qualifying matches took place for three of the five spots on Team Raw with AJ Styles, Keith Lee and Sheamus winning their spots on the team in matches with Jeff Hardy, Elias and Matt Riddle respectively.
The six match card may yet see another edition with an elimination match made up of tag teams from both brands often taking place at the event. In addition, the show will be dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the debut of The Undertaker. So expect an appearance from The Deadman at some point during the night.
WWE Survivor Series will air live on the WWE Network on Sunday November 22nd.
