The final of NJPW’s New Japan Cup 2021 took place today in Sendai, Japan.
The 28-man, single elimination tournament came down to a final pairing of Will Ospreay and Shingo Takagi.
In the end, The Commonwealth Kingpin was crowned as the winner of the tournament after a gruelling match that lasted almost exactly 30 minutes.
As a result of the win, Ospreay will receive a shot at Kota Ibushi’s IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at the Sakura Genesis event on Sunday April 4th.
The true headline of the night took place after the event when Ibushi, who had been on commentary for the final, entered the ring to confront his new challenger.
Ospreay told the champion that he will do absolutely anything to win the title because he loves wrestling more than anything or anyone. To demonstrate the last part of that point he shockingly hit his girlfriend Bea Priestley with his trademark OsCutter to leave her lying in the ring before retreating with his Empire stablemates Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan.
Ospreay is now firmly a part of the heavyweight division and main event in New Japan. Whilst it feels unlikely, but not impossible, that he will win the dual belts next weekend, it is a case of when, not if, the British grappler takes Japan’s top title.
