Rey Mysterio Says Spilt From Dominik Would “Probably Have Been Good”

Rey Mysterio has stated that an on-screen split with his son Dominik via the WWE Draft would have been beneficial to the young WWE Superstar.

When Rey Mysterio returned to WWE in 2018, he was already a WWE legend, but it was only the beginning of his son Dominik’s tale. While the younger Mysterio had previously appeared on WWE television as a child, his appearances as a wrestler became more frequent as he was now a trained wrestler.

Dominik was ready to take his own steps inside a WWE ring by the time the entire Mysterio family was wrapped up in a feud with Seth Rollins and his disciple Buddy Murphy in the summer of 2020. As a result, Dominik made his in-ring debut against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.

The feud raged on before being unceremoniously dropped and the father and son duo began to work together more frequently. After being drafted to SmackDown in October of that year, the Mysterios set their sights on winning the blue brand’s Tag Team Championships. They accomplished this feat at WrestleMania Backlash.

At Money In The Bank, the pair lost the titles to The Usos before cracks in their on-screen relationship began to appear. Dominik was pushing for more independence, while Rey remained concerned about his son.

As a result, many expected the pair to be split up during the recent WWE Draft, but that wasn’t the case, as both men were drafted to Monday Night Raw.

Rey Mysterio told Graham GSM Matthews of Bleacher Report that a split might have been a positive step for Dominik:

“That was definitely up to destiny.”

“We did talk about [the possibility of being split up]. I said, ‘If we eventually get split up, then it was meant to be. You go your way, I’ll go mine.’ At the same time, it would’ve given my son some independence to grow on his own.”

“Pretty much the story we were telling right before we got drafted to Raw. It was in the back of our minds, but it wasn’t anything we were worrying about. If anything, it probably would have been good. It’s a change.”

Despite this, Rey Mysterio stated that he has enjoyed every moment of sharing the ring with his son:

“I’ve been enjoying every moment that I’ve gotten to step in the ring with my son in the ring and backstage. Just interacting [with him] has been incredible. It has been almost a rebirth of my career. I see him and I go back and think of my first baby steps in this industry. I’ve been enjoying it to the fullest.”
