Rewatching WWE Money In The Bank 2010

Money In The Bank 2010

I always look forward to the Money in the Bank (MITB) events. I’m easily swayed by a gimmick match especially when it’s full of ‘BIG SPOTS FOR TITLE SHOTS!’ (copyright – me).

A brief history:

The idea for it was originally pitched by Chris Jericho all the way back at the start of 2005 and for his brilliance he got to be a participant in the first ever MITB match which was held at that year’s Wrestlemania in L.A. (He didn’t win though, so maybe they weren’t THAT impressed with his idea.)

The match would then be at the following five Wrestlemanias up to and including 2010 and then later the same year was made into its own yearly main event, with two MITB ladder matches taking place, one for each brand (It was just Raw and Smackdown back then, no NXT). The women’s MITB matches didn’t start until 2017 and I don’t think I could ever really bring myself to talk about the finish of that. (The winner or the chin-er.)

The first Money in the Bank event:

With the 2020 event taking place on May 10th I decided I’d have a look back at the first proper MITB full event, July 2010, which took place in Kansas City. I’m concentrating on the first Money in the Bank match of the evening as it’s that one that links in to other matches on the card.

Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Christian, Cody Rhodes, Matt Hardy, Drew McIntyre (never heard of him), Kane and the Big Show were all in the Smackdown ladder match for the contract and it started off as you’d expect. A fair few attempts to climb the ladder early and plenty of guys getting pushed off said ladder. Matt Hardy and Christian do what they’ve been perfecting for years and that’s using ladders as weapons.

Highlight of the match was Kofi hitting McIntyre with a Boom Drop from a ladder, through a table although I think the biggest pop of the match is after Big Show gets a 350lb ladder in the ring after a bit of a struggle (I seriously considered saying ‘heavy props there’ but I’m above that).

Big Show ends up buried under a LOT of ladders, putting him out of action. Various wrestlers get thrown on top of the pile of ladders at various points. Kane goes into monster mode and has a solid few minutes of destroying everyone that’s not buried under a pile of ladders.

Anyway! Let’s talk about a great bit of storytelling. After chokeslamming Drew McIntyre from the ladder, Kane wins the MITB match and the contract. (Do you say ‘spoiler’ at the start or the end of a sentence? I can never remember).

A few matches later and Rey Mysterio manages to defend his championship against Jack Swagger in what is actually a fairly decent match and an inventive finish. Swagger doesn’t like losing (get used to it) and takes it out on Mysterio after the match is done. Luckily, Kane has a problem with Swagger so he runs in to make the save, punching and chasing Swagger to the back leaving Mysterio to celebrate his win.

Kane’s music and pyro hits. He’s cashing in. HE’S CASHING IN! He cashed in, and won. I remember watching this when it was on live and honestly did not see that coming in the slightest.

You just don’t expect him to head out to the ring a second time after chasing Swagger off moments beforehand. It was brilliant. It’s still brilliant watching it back a decade later!

The Raw MITB match was just as strong as the Smackdown one but if I tell you everything that happened then you might not go watch it for yourself and what if I get blamed for the decline of people like you watching WWE? I don’t need that stress in my life. That being said, spoilers in the next paragraph.

Interestingly (to me at least) I’ve noticed that apart from the MITB matches all the other fights on the card were for championships and no titles changed hands. (Except for Kane but I’m not counting that as that was ‘unscheduled’).

And now… MITB 2020:

So what about this year’s Money In The Bank event? The men’s match consists of Daniel Bryan, Rey Mysterio, Aleister Black, King Corbin, Otis and a returning AJ Styles. The women’s match has Shayna Baszler, Nia Jax, Asuka, Dana Brooke, Lacey Evans and Carmella.

It’s going to be a strange one that’s for sure. The ring has been set up on the ROOF of WWE headquarters but the wrestlers start on the ground floor. Just to add a little bit more to that, both the male and female MITB ladders matches are starting at the same time. At the same time!

I can’t wait to see what happens because, like I say, I love a gimmick.
