A new report has claimed that Cody Rhodes is currently a free agent after his contract with AEW expired at the end of 2021.
Just days ahead of his return to AEW television, a new report has claimed that Cody Rhodes is in fact working without a contract.
The report from Fightful Select has revealed that Rhodes’ most recent deal with AEW expired at the end of 2021, and is now a free agent. The report adds that Fightful have reached out to Rhodes but he is yet to comment. For their part, AEW officials said that they were not willing to discuss contracts.
The news comes after it was reported that WWE were considering a “surprising” ‘Forbidden Door’ entrant into the Royal Rumble. It has already been announced that IMPACT Knockouts Champion Mickie James will be returning to WWE to take part in the women’s Royal Rumble match.
On a special Christmas Night edition of AEW Rampage, Cody Rhodes became the first-ever three-time TNT Champion with a stunning victory over Sammy Guevara. After the bout, a rematch was quickly scheduled, with the pair set to meet at AEW’s first TNT Saturday night special Battle of the Belts.
However, the day before the show it was announced that Rhodes wouldn’t be able to appear as he hadn’t been medically cleared. The man himself later revealed that he and his wife Brandi were isolating with a family member who had tested positive for COVID-19.
In Rhodes place, Dustin Rhodes and Guevara met for the Interim TNT Championship, a match which Guevara won.
On the January 12th episode of AEW Dynamite it was announced that Rhodes would be returning on January 19th, although no further details around his appearance were given.
