Paul Heyman Reportedly Wanted AEW Star To Shockingly Beat Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania

A new report has claimed that Paul Heyman wanted AEW star Malakai Black – known in WWE as Aleister Black – to get an upset victory over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36.

By the time WrestleMania 36 came around, it was Drew McIntyre who found himself in the ring with Brock Lesnar. He went on to defeat ‘The Conqueror’ to capture the WWE Championship for the first time. It was the culmination of the ‘Scottish Warrior’s journey to the top which began on his return to the company in 2017.

However, McIntyre’s fairytale ending to his comeback story might not have happened if Paul Heyman’s ideas for that year’s ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ had been used.

At the time, Heyman had a dual role as both Lesnar’s on-screen Advocate and the real-life Executive Director of Monday Night Raw.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Heyman would have had Aleister Black be the one to defeat Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship rather than McIntyre. At the event, Black ended up taking on and defeating Bobby Lashley in a mid-card match instead.

Just over a year later, in June 20121, Aleister Black was one of a number of surprising wrestlers released by WWE, others included the likes of Braun Strowman and Ruby Riott, now known as Ruby Soho.

Only a month after being released from WWE, Black made his shock debut in AEW as Malakai Black and immediately set his sights on Cody Rhodes and the Nightmare Family. Black defeated Cody twice in a matter of weeks before Rhodes finally beat the leader of the House of Black on a special Saturday Night Dynamite on October 23rd.
