This week’s episode of NXT was taped ahead of the show’s temporary two week move to SyFy.
It looks to be a banger of a show with the return of a major young star, a major turn and perhaps even more excitingly, confirmation that Samoa Joe will return to the ring at NXT TakeOver 36 on Sunday August 22nd.
To nobody’s surprise, Joe will challenge for the NXT Championship against the undefeated Karrion Kross.
Joe has not taken part in a match since January 2020. The set up for the match saw Kross attack Joe last week after the latter acted as special referee for Kross’ title defence against Johnny Gargano.
On this week’s show Kross attacked NXT General Manager William Regal, prompting Joe to declare he is transitioning to full time competition again to face Kross.
A win would make Joe the first ever three time NXT Champion having held the belt twice on his short previous run on the brand.
Joe was surprisingly released from WWE in April after over a year on the injured list including a stint in the Raw commentary booth.
He was soon resigned to an NXT contract and was introduced last month as William Regal’s enforcer.
