A new report has revealed the planned outcome for the huge clash between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at WWE Day 1.
While Brock Lesnar walked out of Day 1 with the WWE Championship, that outcome was far from the original plan. After all, just hours before the show began, Lesnar wasn’t even scheduled to be in the WWE Championship match.
Going into Day 1 Lesnar was scheduled to resume hostilities with Universal Champion Roman Reigns, but a positive COVID test for the Tribal Chief caused a dramatic late change to the card. That change saw Lesnar added to the WWE Title match, where he later pinned Big E after a crushing F-5.
In the days after the event it was reported that Big E was always meant to lose the championship, although he was originally supposed to lose it to Seth Rollins. This has naturally left fans wondering just who was meant to walk out of Day 1 with the Universal Title, had Reigns not tested positive?
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has now reported that had Brock Lesnar faced Roman Reigns at the event, The Tribal Chief’s title reign was going to come to an end:
“The plan for Day 1 was that Seth was gonna be the WWE Champion coming off of the show and Lesnar was gonna be the Universal Champion coming off of the show. So Lesnar is now the Champion. Seth was going to defend the title on one of the WrestleMania nights and then Lesnar and Roman were gonna be for the other title on the other WrestleMania night.”
With Reigns and Lesnar appearing to go their separate ways, at least for now, both men are set to face new challengers at the Royal Rumble. Lesnar will defend his WWE Championship against former champion Bobby Lashley, while Reigns will face old foe Seth Rollins.
