Kofi Kingston has said that current WWE Champion and his partner in The New Day Big E was at one stage set to be a member of The Shield.
Debuting at the Survivor Series in 2012, The Shield helped CM Punk retain the WWE Championship in a match against Ryback and John Cena. The original trio for the group were current Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins.
The three superstars became a stable with some of the top title credentials of all time. All three stars held the WWE Championship, with Rollins also holding the Universal Championship and ‘The Head Of The Table’ now enjoying a reign of over a year. Ambrose, in contrast, left WWE in 2019 only to go on to win the AEW World Championship, now going by the name of Jon Moxley.
Speaking to Rich Ucchino of Sportskeeda Wrestling, Kingston revealed that it all could have gone very differently for both The New Day and The Shield had Big E been on the opposite side.
Big E will tell the story a lot better, but long-story-short, he was actually supposed to be in the Shield a long time ago, way way back when they were trying to pick people from FCW to come up. So Roman gets the call, Roman goes off, builds himself, and does all these incredible things and incredible run with The Shield. Roman is Roman and also Big E has done some incredible things and [shown] some incredible growth . . . Now, everyone loves Big E, so there’s a big journey there too.
Big E and Roman Reigns came face to face on this week’s edition of Monday Night Raw, in a confrontation which preceded a six-man tag match pitting The New Day against The Bloodline. The night was not over for the two main title holders, as they also then competed in a triple-threat match which also included former WWE Champion Bobby Lashley.
