Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega is set to miss “several months” of action as he undergoes a number of surgeries to fix a series of long-standing injury problems.
Following his defeat to “Hangman” Adam Page at AEW Full Gear, multiple reports have emerged suggesting that Kenny Omega is set to be out of action for a number of months. The former AEW World Champion is reportedly carrying a series of long-standing injury problems notably a shoulder issue which has effected his strength and ability to train.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Kenny Omega will be “taking several months off.” He went on to confirm that the ‘Best Bout Machine’ has been performing with an abdominal hernia and knee issues.
“He worked most of this year with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He’s also worked for months on an abdominal hernia, as well as knee issues. At times he’s been in great pain and at other times it’s been manageable pain. He’s done constant rehab and medical treatments weekly to stay in the game as champion.
On the big stage, he had to be one of the best in the world, given much of the year he held the world titles of AEW, Impact and AAA, meaning he was called to headline both the major AEW and Impact shows at the same time. At times he privately wondered if he’d done so much damage over the years that his time left in the sport was limited and publicly on one of our shows was more open and in depth about his in-ring future.”
While Kenny Omega may have lost the AEW World Title he still holds the AAA Mega Heavyweight Championship. The champion had been due to travel to Mexico to defend the belt on December 4th against El Hijo del Vikingo. Obviously that match is now off, with AAA aware that Omega is unavailable due to undergoing surgery.
It’s noted that Omega could be expected back around the end of February, but has been told to take as long as he needs to recover by AEW President Tony Khan.
“Omega will be getting surgery for the shoulder, knee and abdominal issues, and likely for a septum issue, using different specialists. The surgeries will not be that major and the expectation would be for him to return in or around late February, but Tony Khan has told him to take the time off that he needs.”
On the most recent episode of Dynamite, “Hangman” Adam Page came face to face with his next challenger Bryan Danielson who promptly promised to take out every member of the Dark Order before dethroning the champion.
