John Cena has given strong praise to JBL for helping him through one of the biggest moments of his career.
The WWE Hall Of Famer went up against Cena at WrestleMania 21, putting the WWE Championship on the line. This was very early in the career of Cena, despite already being hugely popular with the WWE fans. In Hollywood that night, Cena defeated JBL to win the first of his 16 World Championships.
Speaking at a Florida Supercon Q and A, Cena spoke of the lessons JBL taught him throughout his career, and in particular that night at The Grandest Stage Of Them All.
John was always great about keeping you grounded, and he did a lot for me and I’m forever thankful to him. That’s the one thing I remember from that day, him turning to me deadpan and saying, ‘You are winning!’ And almost like, ‘Get over yourself man, I’m trying to build myself up as the biggest obstacle you can overcome which is why it’s raining money and you’re going to win so that’s going to be enough for this evening so just take that and you’re going to be good.’ I really thank him for not only that lesson but he gave me a bunch of lessons through my career.
The rivalry between Cena and JBL would continue until the summer, and the rivalry was only temporarily ended when Cena was drafted to Raw later in 2005. They would face off one final time at the 2009 Royal Rumble, where Cena would successfully defend the World Heavyweight Championship against the Hall Of Famer.
