Riddle Says Vince McMahon Didn’t Get Him At First, Called Him “A Goof”

Matt Riddle

WWE Raw Tag Team Champion Riddle has revealed that nobody, including Vince McMahon, “got” his character when he moved up to the main roster.

Kurt Angle announced that Riddle was moving from NXT to SmackDown in June 2020. Speaking on Corey Graves’ ‘After The Bell’ podcast, the ‘Original Bro’ said that nobody got him when he arrived on the blue brand, with Vince McMahon going as far as calling him a “goof”.

“And at first, they didn’t get it. Nobody got it, Vince [McMahon] didn’t get it. He was like, ‘You’re a goof’ and I went, ‘Well I’m a goof that can kick your a** dude.’ I know I’m goofy but like, when I get in that ring, I turn it up and at first he didn’t see it but now I think they see the in-ring ability with the entertainment side of it.”

Since his debut on SmackDown, the company has got behind Riddle and he went on to win the WWE United States Championship from Bobby Lashley in a Triple Threat match also involving John Morrison. He held the title for two months until losing it to Sheamus at WrestleMania 37.

Over the following weeks, he convinced Randy Orton to form a tag team with him which he named ‘RK-Bro’. At this year’s SummerSlam, the unlikely duo defeated AJ Styles and Omos for the Raw Tag Team Championships.
