Cody Rhodes has become a record-breaking three-time TNT Champion, having defeated Sammy Guevara for the title at AEW’s Christmas Day special edition of Rampage entitled Holiday Bash, with an interesting challenger emerging after the cameras stopped rolling.

‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes initially laid down the challenge to ‘The Spanish God’ on the 8th December episode of AEW Dynamite, marking himself as a new challenger for the title holder who originally won the strap when he defeated Miro on the 29th September edition of the same show.

As the contest on the Christmas Day special drew to a close, it looked as if Cody Rhodes had the match won with the Cross Rhodes, however Guevara was able to get his shoulder up at the last second and even get a near fall of his own following a GTH. However, a further two Cross Rhodes followed by a Tiger Driver ’98 was enough for Rhodes to get the pinfall and win the TNT Championship on a record third occasion.

North Carolina wrestling legend David Crockett made a special appearance to present ‘The American Nightmare’ with the title belt as the show went off the air.

After the cameras stopped rolling for AEW Rampage, an off-air segment saw Cody Rhodes confronted by new AEW sensation Hook. The Team Taz member first shook hands with the new champion, before slapping him in the face. This led to Tony Khan teasing a contest between the two the next time the company is in Greensboro.

Cody Rhodes was the inaugural TNT Champion, however also lost the title on that occasion in shocking fashion when he was beaten by the late Brodie Leein a little over three minutes. He would regain the title in what would be Lee’s final-ever match when the pair battled in a Dog Collar Match. The second reign for ‘The American Nightmare’ ended in a loss to Darby Allin at All Out 2020.
