Christian Cage Becomes IMPACT World Champion, First Challenger Confirmed

Christian Cage

Christian Cage has defeated Kenny Omega to become the IMPACT World Championship for the first time.

The title win is Cage’s first World Championship title reign since 2011, when he defeated Randy Orton to hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Competing on the first edition of AEW Rampage, it was only Omega’s IMPACT belt on the line, and not his AEW World Championship.

During the match it looked like ‘The Cleaner’ was going to retain, with Cage somehow kicking out of the V-Trigger. At this point Cage rallied and got a couple of near falls of his own, following firstly a spear and then a frogsplash.

Omega then tried to play the numbers game, with The Young Bucks and Don Callis trying to get involved. However, this would end up backfiring allowing Cage to hit the Killswitch on a steel chair to get the decisive pinfall.

Following his initial success in WWE, Cage headed to IMPACT Wrestling back in 2005. During his three-year spell with the company he held the NWA Championship on two occasions. This is why, whilst being a World Champion under the IMPACT banner, he never held their own title, but rather than the NWA belt which is currently held by Nick Aldis.

Cage would return to WWE in 2008, and would go on to be a two-time title holder there as well, before being forced to retire in 2014.

IMPACT Wrestling have been quick to confirm Cage’s first challenger, as he will defend the title against Brian Myers on Friday, August 20 at Emergence.
