Cassie Lee Recalls Failed Pitch To Return To NXT Ahead Of WWE Exit

Cassie Lee

Cassie Lee, formerly known as Peyton Royce has revealed that she asked to return to NXT ahead of her release by WWE in April.

Speaking in a new interview with Shakiel Mahjouri of Cageside Seats, Cassie Lee revealed that her request was “being looked into” when she was let go by the company.

“I actually asked to go back and it was kind of, you know, it ‘was being looked into,’ is what I was told and then I got released”

During her time in WWE, Lee appeared alongside her best friend Jessica McKay (Billie Kay) as The IIconics for the majority of her run. The team were only broken up in the summer of 2020. After the pair split, both struggled to gain any real momentum a singles stars before being released.

Reflecting on her time with McKay, Lee said that she wished the pair would have had a proper run as a babyface team, as they usually worked as heels.

“Yeah, I mean, we would have loved to explore what it would be like to be the good guys. But on top of that, like when, when we kind of came back, we had a little bit of a hiatus, and we came back early 2020 and we were kind of in the championship story. I wish we got to stay in that a bit longer because that was my favorite era of us. I think it was our best combination of who we are as people and as characters and then the fact that we could still go in championship matches, as well. I would have liked to have taken more time with that.”

McKay agreed that she would have been in favour of a babyface run, before revealing that the pair almost ended up in a program with The Bellas.

“Yeah, I would have loved to I mean, and this, people know now that you know, there were talks of us feuding with the Bellas when we won the championships. I would have loved to do that. I think that would have put us on a whole different level, being able to work with them both of those extraordinary women. So that’s always something that is bittersweet that it never happened. Yeah, but just the thought that that was a possibility is still really cool.”

After signing with WWE in 2015, Cassie Lee and Jessica McKay (Billie Kay) were paired up almost right away. The duo enjoyed a fine run through NXT, later winning the Women’s Tag Team Titles on the main roster.

Since leaving WWE Lee and McKay launched their own podcast ‘Off Her Chops.’ The two friends, now known as The IInspiration have also announced a tour that will run throughout October.
