Brock Lesnar Reveals He Considered Retirement Before Returning To WWE

Brock Lesnar has sensationally revealed that he felt he had already retired two years ago, before then deciding to make a return to the squared circle.

Competing in the 2020 whilst being the reigning WWE Champion, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ was eliminated by the eventual winner of the match, Drew McIntyre, setting up a WrestleMania match between the two with the title on the line.

With the pandemic taking hold in between the two shows, ‘The Showcase Of The Immortals’ was forced to take place in front of no fans at the WWE Performance Centre in Orlando, Florida rather than with a stadium full of fans.

WrestleMania was also held over two nights, with Drew McIntyre defeating Brock Lesnar in the main event of the second evening. Lesnar would take a hiatus from the company, not returning until SummerSlam 2021.

Speaking during an appearance on The Michael Kay Show, Lesnar spoke of how he felt he had come full circle due to the nature of competing in front of no fans at WrestleMania, and considered himself to be retired from wrestling after that match.

When I was younger I thought ‘ah, I’ll want to retire when I’m 40’. I actually retired when COVID hit and my contract was up in 2020, I think. So full circle Brock Lesnar story; I had my first pro wrestling match in Hamel, Minnesota in a garage in front of no people. And 20 years later, in the WWE Heavyweight Champion of the world, had my last wrestling match in a warehouse in front of no people. So 20 years, full cycle, full revolution. And I’m like ‘alright, cool, I’m out.

Brock Lesnar also made it clear that money was a factor in his decision to return at SummerSlam, but notably he also returned sporting a new look which came about so he didn’t lose a bet with his kids.

My whole life I’ve been wearing a flat top. You know, crew cut. I grew my beard out. I had one beard when I fought in the UFC, but I said ‘I’m just, I’m just gonna let it all go.’ And then last summer before any of this evolved, like, it was so hot. I’m like ‘I’m gonna cut my hair.’

So my kids cut my hair and then they were like ‘I’m gonna give you a mohawk.’ And then they go ‘I bet you won’t wear a ponytail.’ I was like ‘I’m not gonna lose a bet to my kid.’ So I wore this, this look that I got. And it wasn’t like a mastermind of nothing. It was a joke. Here I am. Brock Lesnar, the biga- joke.

Brock Lesnar is now scheduled to face Roman Reigns at this year’s WrestleMania, with both the WWE Championship and Universal Championship on the line, with reports suggesting that the company will move to just having one unified title after the event.
