A new report has suggested that we haven’t had all the surprises for this year’s Royal Rumble already, with WWE seemingly considering more names from outside the company being involved.
Whilst there have been more confirmed entrants for the Royal Rumble in recent years rather than keeping many spots as surprises, it was somewhat surprising that plenty of women were announced to participate during the 7th January edition of SmackDown.
Among the names confirmed were the returning Bella Twins and Lita, and perhaps most shockingly Mickie James. The current IMPACT Knockouts Champion was released by WWE in April 2021 in acrimonious fashion, where she was delivered her personal belongings in a trash bag.
Fightful Select has given some more information as to why the names were announced so early. Their report says that WWE has acted quicker than in previous years to secure names for the match, although those who were announced were not aware that the news was about to be revealed. It also suggests that the confirmations were made in an effort to boost ticket sales.
The report also says that the script for the show contained “(?) Impact Knockouts Champion (?).” ahead of the announcement for Mickie James. The reference was made by Pat McAfee, and was seemingly one of the conditions for Mickie James agreeing to appear in the Royal Rumble.
In a final exciting note from the report, Fightful Select also says that there are other “interesting” and “big” names from outside the company who have been pitched to appear in the match, however as you’d imagine at this point every effort will be made to keep this secret until an official announcement or surprise on the night.
