5 Key Moments From WWE Raw (August 16, 2021)

Riddle vs AJ Styles

On the go-home Raw before this weekend’s WWE SummerSlam, Nikki A.S.H. and Rhea Ripley pulled double duty when they went one-on-one before teaming up, Drew McIntyre fought one-on-two, and Goldberg came face-to-face with ‘The Almighty’ Bobby Lashley

1. Orton doesn’t need friends, Riddle, or anyone

Randy Orton opened this week’s episode of Raw to explain that the reason he hit Riddle with an RKO last week was that he doesn’t need friends. This brought out Riddle who told Orton he’d learnt his lesson and wanted to be in the Viper’s corner for his match against Omos. This then brought out the giant Omos himself, alongside A.J. Styles who challenged, and defeated, Riddle in the opening match (with a distraction from Omos). Notably, Randy Orton didn’t stay at ringside for the match – much to Riddle’s disappointment.

2. Drew McIntyre wins a handicap match for a SummerSlam stipulation

Drew McIntyre will be going one-on-one with Jinder Mahal at this weekend’s PPV. On Raw he faced Veer and Shanky in a handicap match which he won by hitting Shanky with the Claymore Kick to get the pin. The victory means that both Veer and Shanky will be barred from ringside at SummerSlam, leaving Mahal with no backup against the Scottish Warrior.

3. Nikki A.S.H and Rhea Ripley team against Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax

Earlier in the show WWE Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. came up short in a meeting with Rhea Ripley when she fell to Ripley’s Riptide. Flair had been on commentary and after the match Nikki had enough of her taunts and rushed the Queen. She was quickly joined by Ripley in the beatdown with the Nightmare and Nikki A.S.H. taking turns attacking Flair before she managed to escape the ring. This set up a match where Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax took on Nikki and Ripley later in the night. That match was won by Flair, getting the pin on Ripley after she forcefully tagged herself in when Jax was about to hit a Vader Bomb, leaving Jax seething in the ring.

4. R-K-Bro to challenge for the Raw Tag Team Titles

While the record will show Randy Orton defeated Omos this week on Raw, it will also show that it was by disqualification. The end of the match came about when A.J. Styles interfered in the match and attacked Orton, leaving the referee no choice but to call for the bell. After the match Omos and Styles carried on the beat-down on the Viper but Riddle ran out to a huge pop from the crowd and made the save. With chants of “R-K-Bro” in the arena, Orton got on the mic and announced that not only has Riddle earned his respect but R-K-Bro are back together and will challenge Styles and Omos for the RAW Tag Team Titles at SummerSlam.

5. Lashley eats a Spear from Goldberg

Goldberg was in the ring detailing that he came out of retirement so that his son, Gage, could see firsthand who Goldberg is, who his father is. This brought out WWE Champion Bobby Lashley and MVP, who took umbridge with the amount of talking Goldberg has been doing of late. Lashley got face to face with Goldberg in the ring and told him that he’d have the privilege of telling his family he was finally sent in to retirement by the Almighty WWE Champion. Goldberg replied with two words: “That’s Bulls**t”. Lashley swung for the challenger but Goldberg ducked and countered with a Spear, leaving the Champion on the floor.
