5 Key Moments From WWE NXT (August 17, 2021)

Samoa Joe & Karrion Kross

This week’s episode of WWE NXT came from the Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, Florida. On the go-home show before NXT TakeOver 36, we saw WALTER interfere for the second week in a row, the further romance of InDex, and Kross and Samoa Joe come to blows.

1. Dragunov gets a win, and multiple stitches

KUSHIDA wasn’t cleared to compete this week which left the way open for Ilja Dragunov to answer Roderick Strong’s open challenge. During the bout Dragunov was busted open but went on to win the hard-hitting match by pinfall after hitting the Torpedo Moscow on Strong. Following the match it was announced Ilja needed eight stitches but is medically cleared to compete at NXT: TakeOver 36 this weekend where he takes on WALTER.

2. InDex take the next step

On this week’s episode of NXT, Dexter Lumis and Indi Hartwell were victorious in a mixed tag match against Robert Stone and Jessie Kamea. Following the win, Indi got down on one knee in the centre of the ring and proposed to Lumis. With the crowd chanting “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Lumis nodded and accepted, while Indy put a ring on his finger.

3. Brawl breaks out after Tag Team Championship match

NXT Tag Team Champions MSK (Wes Lee and Nash Carter) put the titles on the line this week against Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner of Imperium. The match went back and forth until NXT UK Champion WALTER made his way to ringside and distracted the referee, allowing Imperium to take out Carter. WALTER’s upcoming opponent at TakeOver 36, Ilja Dragunov, wasn’t about to let this lie, and ran down and attacked the NXT UK Champion. In the ring MSK got the pin to retain the titles. After the bell all six men went at each other which culminated in Imperium standing tall over a downed Dragunov.

4. NXT Breakout Tournament Finals Announced

Carmelo Hayes defeated Duke Hudson to advance to next week’s tournament final and take on Odyssey Jones, with the winner getting a future NXT title shot of their choice. After the match Triple H took to Twitter:

“Different styles, sizes, and attitude. One singular goal… Who will be the breakout? The finals of the #WWENXT #NXTBreakout Tournament happen NeXT week!!”

5. Kross and Joe go toe-to-toe

With Samoa Joe in the ring and Karrion Kross on the ramp, NXT security guards definitely had their work cut out for them. As Kross got on the apron the crowd chanted “Joe’s going to kill you” and as he stepped through the ropes it seemed the crowd was right as Joe attacked Kross and threw him to the guards on the outside. Joe then hit a Suicide Dive to the outside taking out everybody. Both wrestlers brawled around the ring area, which ended with both men crashing through the barrier and being unable to stand as officials checked on them and NXT went off the air.
