Real Madrid Set To Swoop For England International

Real Madrid are said to be “monitoring” England defender Joe Gomez ahead of a potential swoop for the Liverpool star.

Gomez has impressed whenever appearing for Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic, but the 24-year-old missed most of last season with a knee injury and has been hindered this term by calf and groin issues.

Last season, Gomez found himself sidelined alongside Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, leaving Liverpool fielding makeshift pairings of Nat Philips and Rhys Williams, with midfielder Fabinho dropping back on occasion too. Such were the club’s woes in that position that captain Jordan Henderson even played at the back on occasion.

However, with Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig and the Reds’ defence remaining largely settled this season with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip cementing their places in the team, minutes may be limited even if Gomez were fit.

That point was reinforced in the absence of stalwart Van Dijk this weekend, with Konate and Matip starting against Tottenham and Gomez being introduced for the last few minutes.

According to BBC, La Liga leaders Real Madrid feel there is a chance Gomez could leave Anfield at the end of the season, but it’s likely a substantial fee would be required as he currently has three-and-a-half years left on his contract.

Real Madrid are known to be looking at central defenders, but it’s reported that the club understands there is “no hope” of signing Gomez in the January transfer window and any deal would likely take place in the summer.

Of course, Real Madrid may also see another high profile arrival in 2022 in the form of Kylian Mbappe.
