Paul Scholes Picks His 2 Favourites To Become Next Man United Boss

Paul Scholes

Manchester United legend and Champions League winner Paul Scholes has named his two preferences for the man to take over the Old Trafford hot seat in the summer.

The Red Devils are still on the hunt for a permanent boss after sacking club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021. Just 8 days after Solskjaer’s dismissal, the club moved to name former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick as their interim boss until the end of the season. Following that, Rangnick is expected to work for United in a consultancy role.

Rangnick’s time in charge of Manchester United started well, with the German presiding over wins against Crystal Palace and Norwich. An enforced break followed due to COVID before Rangnick’s side salvaged a draw against Newcastle in a lackluster performance before a defeat against Wolves.

Now United icon Paul Scholes has named the two men that he’d be happy to see in charge of United next season in conversation on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel. The former England international made clear that he wants to see Antonio Conte or Mauricio Pochettino in charge of his former club:

“Conte at Tottenham or Pochettino. I think one of those is the manager we want. We know that Conte is up there with [Pep] Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klopp, and [Thomas] Tuchel. We know that – that’s a given. So I think Man United should be looking for someone like that. Tottenham fans won’t like me saying it, but I think they could probably still get him [in the summer].”

“You can already see Conte’s getting a bit frustrated with his players, he wants other stuff. I think Conte could do something special here. He’s got the pedigree to do it. Will we be able to get him in? I don’t know.”

“I think Pochettino is a brilliant manager, I love what he does and I love what he did at Tottenham. We don’t know yet what’s happening at PSG. Let’s see if he can prove to be an elite manager. He still has something to prove for me but I think he’s more than capable of doing it.”

Scholes also added his thoughts on Rangnick as United manager and says he can’t get his “head around” the appointment:

“For me, Manchester United should have the best available in the most important roles. The most important role is the manager. We’ve gone to a man who is well regarded across Europe, but he hasn’t actually had that much success as a coach. He’s been asked to come and manage the biggest club in the world. That’s something I can’t get my head around.”

“They need one of the best managers in the world, one of the five best managers in the world, and they haven’t got that. I find that astonishing.”

Antonio Conte was only given the Tottenham Hotspur job on November 2nd, 2021, and became the first Spurs boss to go unbeaten in his first 8 league games in charge.

Pochettino was lauded for his success at Spurs before his sacking in November 2019, just six months after leading the North London outfit to the first Champions League final in their history.

French publication Le Parisien has claimed that Pochettino and Manchester United have kept in touch since Solskjaer’s dismissal, a possible indication that the man in charge of PSG could be on his way out of Paris in the summer.
