Manchester City’s versatile full-back Joao Cancelo has posted a photo of cuts to the face he suffered after attempting to fight off a gang of robbers at his home.
The 28-year-old posted an image of his injuries on Instagram with the statement:
“Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family.
“When you show resistance, this is what happens. They managed to take all my jewellery and leave me with my face with this state.”
Manchester City have also released a statement where they say they are “shocked and appalled” and confirm they are supporting Cancelo and his family, and add that the attack took place in Cancelo’s home.
“We are shocked and appalled that Joao Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted.
“Joao and his family are being supported by the Club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter.”
Joao Cancelo has played an instrumental role in the Citizens powering back to the top of the Premier League table after winning the league last year, becoming a staple of the team having only missed one game in the competitions this season.
Cancelo was voted into the Professional Footballers’ Association Premier League team of the season in 2020-21, having arrived at City in a £60m deal from Juventus in August 2019.
“After so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more that I will overcome,” Cancelo added.
As an 18-year-old, in 2013, Joao Cancelo was a passenger in a tragic car accident that killed his mother.
