Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Today, Chelsea Football Club confirmed that England International left back will undergo knee surgery after suffering an ACL injury.

The 25-year-old suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage during Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League win against Juventus on 23rd November and the club initially allowed the defender to begin rehabilitation work in the hope he could avoid surgery.

Chelsea Football Club shared the following statement:

“After a knee injury in the match against Juventus the Chelsea medical department, in collaboration with their knee specialist, took the decision to attempt a conservative rehab approach.

“Unfortunately Ben was unable to progress and so collectively the decision has been taken to proceed this week with a surgical repair.”

Chilwell, along with Reece James at right back, got Chelsea off to a flyer this season as the pair became the lynchpins of the Blues’ attack from the wings. Chilwell has three goals and one assist in six Premier League games this season.

An initial scan revealed Chilwell had sustained a partial ACL tear, and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said at the time “the next six weeks will tell the story” on whether he would require surgery. The club has now confirmed the surgery.
