Aston Villa Reportedly Paying Less Than 50% Of Coutinho Wage

Aston Villa

Aston Villa are reportedly paying less than half of Philippe Coutinho’s wage whilst the Brazilian is on loan from Barcelona.

Coutinho joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season having been surplus to requirement at Barca go with the signing of Ferran Torresfrom Manchester City for £55m creating more urgency with players needing to leave before the Spaniard can be officially registered.

However, it has now emerged that Aston Villa are paying less then 50% of the Barca star’s wage – even less than had been paid for Ross Barkley while the Chelsea star was at Villa Park.

Sky reporter Rob Dorsett reported the details on Twitter.

“Been told that #avfc are paying less than 50% of Coutinho’s #barca weekly wages, plus bonuses.”

While Newcastle United were mooted as early favourites, interest came yesterday from Aston Villa as manager Steven Gerrard is a huge admirer of Coutinho, and a former Liverpool team-mate of the Brazilian. Arsenal, Everton and Spurs were all been said to have interest in a potential move.

Aston Villa confirmed the move:

“Aston Villa and FC Barcelona have agreed terms for Philippe Coutinho to spend the rest of this season on loan at Villa Park.

“The agreement, which is subject to the player completing a medical and receiving a work permit, also includes an option to buy and Philippe will travel to Birmingham in the next 48 hours.”

Meanwhile, Coutinho may not be the only star ready to swap Barcelona for the Premier League, with Newcastle United reportedly tabling a “monster offer” in order to try and secure the signature of Ousmane Dembele.

Newcastle United have found themselves rooted to the relegation zone this season, with an escape looking almost impossible. However, a Saudi-backed takeover means the club has money to burn, with an influx of players set to arrive starting with Kieran Trippier who has signed with the Magpies.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have seen their fortunes shift following the arrival of Steven Gerrard.
