The Football Association says it’s “looking into” a yellow card received by an Arsenal player earlier this season following reports of suspicious betting patterns.

The Athletic has reported that a bookmaker contacted the Football Association following irregular betting patterns being spotted during an Arsenal match. No details of the match or player involved have been made public at this time.

A spokesperson for the FA is quoted as saying “The FA is aware of the matter in question and is looking into it.” However, the incident is not thought to be under any formal investigation by the Football Association at the moment.

The proliferation of online gambling has given rise to “spot betting” where a punter can place money on any number of incidents taking place during the course of a match, including cards given, corners, and shots on goal.

The Scottish FA recently issued notices of complaint to 14 figures involved in senior football, including current Greenock Morton boss Dougie Imrie, for alleged incidents involving betting that took place over several years.

In 20 league games so far in the Premier League this season The Gunners have racked up 30 yellow cards as a team with Belgian Albert Sambi Lokonga receiving the most for the club so far in 2021/22 with 4.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be on his way out of the club after he was the subject of an audacious bid from a Saudi Arabian-based club.
